Fading Frontier van Deerhunter

Deerhunter’s seventh album is warm, relaxed, and comfortable--unexpected qualities in restless magpie Bradford Cox. Opener "All The Same" boasts a stoned-and-sunny Beatles melody; the creamy "Duplex Planet" blends Cox's [Strokes]-filtered drawl with amiable indie guitar and the prim sound of a harpsichord; "Snakeskin" tosses some raucous spice into the same brew. The album's best moments are its weirder ones, especially the deep, subaquatic background that gradually absorbs "Ad Astra"'s dreamy vocals. But it's an easygoing weirdness--you could even call it whimsical.
