Over Pat McLaughlin
This singer-songwriter is a classic chew-'em-up-and-spit-'em-out music industry hard luck story. Signed to Capitol in the late 1980s on the strength of his classic songwriting and equally impressive, Southern-inflected Blue-Eyed Soul vocals, he was spotted on the cultural radar for about one minute. He appeared on the usual TV shows, topped a few critics' polls and even dinged the charts with his song "Wrong Number" before getting dropped and seemingly disappearing. Thankfully, he didn't really disappear -- he just began recording for smaller labels, collaborated with other like-minded artists, and had his material covered by others. He's still out there, bloodied but unbowed.
